How to use this tutorial: start from Step 1 — watch the video once, then crochet along. After each step, check your stitch count against the booklet before moving on. Frogging (unraveling) is part of the process, not a failure — we've packed 20% extra yarn, so go ahead and redo.

Part 1 · Legs and Body

Brown yarn, starting at the foot. Don't work the base too loosely — a loose foot goes floppy.

1

Magic ring + turning chain + sc
brown yarn · start at the foot

Loop yarn around your finger → insert hook → pull up a loop; work 5 sc into the ring, pull the center tight, slip stitch to join. Single crochet mantra: insert, pull up, pull through both loops. Mark the first sc with a stitch marker right away; remove it only after inserting for the slip stitch.

2

Leg increases
5 → 15 sts · groups = starting stitches

Round 2: inc in every stitch (5 groups, 10 sts) → Round 3: sc 1, inc around (5 groups, 15 sts). You started with 5, so every round has 5 groups. Count your V's after every round; move on only when the count is right.

3

4 even rounds · cut one, keep one
make two legs

From round 4, work 4 even rounds to form a straight tube. Fasten off the first leg; leave the second leg on the yarn — do not cut. The second leg stays attached — the next step continues straight from it. Check: two identical little tubes, one cut free, one still on the yarn.

4

Joining the legs · the body begins
a bridge of 2 chains

From the attached leg, chain 2, then slip stitch into the other leg — pull it snug; after the turning chain, work sc around both legs, working into one side of each bridge chain. Don't work into the joining slip stitch — it isn't a stitch. The side with the slip-stitch seam is the wrong side — keep the right side out.

Part 2 · Body and Neck

Even rounds first, then fold to find the sides for the waist.

5

8 even rounds
the most relaxing part

From the joining round, crochet evenly with no increases or decreases — count up from the leg join and stop at 8 rows. Each round still closes with a slip stitch + turning chain; the marker travels with the first stitch.

6

Side decreases · shaping waist and neck
fold to find the sides

Fold the tube flat — the two folded edges are where the decreases go. Work a decrease (2 sts together) at each side; the round ends at 28 sts. How many plain sc before each decrease (6 or 7) — trust your own piece: fold it and aim for the edge. A stitch off to one side is fine — just match both sides.

7

One buffer round + sc 3, dec
don't skip the buffer

Work 1 even round first, then a round of sc 3, dec around. The buffer round keeps the waist curve gentle instead of pinched. Check: the waist narrows further, still smooth and round.

8

Neck shaping + stuffing
body complete

Sc 5, dec → sc 4, dec → add a little fiberfill → sc 3, dec. Stuff in small handfuls and leave the opening clear — the head continues from here. If you keep snagging the stuffing, pull a little out. Check: the top narrows to a small collar.

Part 3 · Head (One-Piece) and Arms

The head grows straight off the collar — no head-sewing later.

9

Head increases · straight off the body
one-piece construction

Don't cut the yarn — grow the head right off the collar: sc 1, inc → sc 2, inc; the circle expands again. For a firmer, rounder head, work this round into the whole V (not just half). Check: above the collar, the circle spreads out again — the head is coming.

10

6 even rounds for the head
building depth

One sc in every stitch, 6 even rounds. Count up from the last increase round: one, two… six. Check: the disk curves into a sphere with 6 visible rows.

11

Closing the head · stuff as you go
stuff before it gets tight

Sc 3, dec → 1 even round → sc 2, dec → 1 even round → sc 1, dec for 2 rounds (add stuffing first) → fill completely → decrease down to 6 sts; sl st, leave a tail: with the darning needle, weave through the front loops, cinch closed, secure to the side, weave in. If stitching gets hard after stuffing, add the stuffing one round earlier or loosen it a bit.

12

Arms × 2 · slope finish
the secret to shoulders

Magic ring 6 sc → 6 inc → 6 even rounds; to finish: after the slip stitch, slip stitch once more into the next stitch, ease over to the third stitch and end with a sc — that's the slope. Leave a tail, cut, and stuff lightly but firmly (tweezers or the hook handle help). Skip the slope and the sewn-on arms will stick up.

Part 4 · Icing · Bow · Face

The big reveal — meet your gingerbread man.

13

White icing trim + sewing the arms
white yarn · darning needle

Bring white yarn out from inside the piece and sew the wavy icing line around each arm (and leg): in one row lower, two stitches over, and back — repeat. Then sew the arms on: seam line down, stitch diagonally into the body's sides, skip a stitch at the neck, and sew one more pass along the same path to reinforce. Hold both arms against the body to compare positions before sewing.

14

Green bow · double crochet
new stitch: dc

Green yarn, magic ring: chain 3 + 2 dc + sl st, then repeat the same group once more; cinch the ring, wrap the long tail around the middle a few times and knot to shape, then sew or glue the bow at the neckline. Double crochet mantra: yarn over → insert, pull up (3 loops) → pull through 2 → pull through 2. Don't trim the wrapping tail too short — leave enough to hide at the back.

15

Buttons · mouth · blush · eyes
the big reveal

Buttons: red, 2 strands, magic ring 6 sc, sl st — make two and glue them down the belly. Mouth: black yarn, sew a 3-stitch-wide curve on the face. Blush: 2 strands of pink, enter from the back, level with the mouth, 3 stitches apart. Eyes: glue the black beads at the center of each side. Buttons are too small to sew — glue is the intended method; knot the back first for grip. Park stitch markers to place every feature before you glue or sew.
